The present design (...) was adopted for its
symbolism (the red field is a representation of Christ's
blood, and the cross also comes from Christian
iconography) back in the 1870s on the understanding that it
would never be changed.
Each flag shown is
the flag used by that
nation's government and displayed at the U.N.
headquarters. Where noted the "civil" flag is also
available. It is identical to the "government" flag except
the seal is omitted.
Flags for Outdoor use are made of 100% heavyweight
nylon and finished with strong canvas headings and brass
grommets.
