Black, yellow, red were the colours of the
Uganda People's Congress party, who came to power in elections
in April 1962. The flag was adopted on
the date of independence, 9 Oct 1962. To quote Whitney Smith
("Flags Through the Ages and Across the World", 1975): "The
three colours were intended to
symbolise the people of Africa, sunshine and brotherhood. The
design was suggested by the minister of justice, Mr Grace
Ibingira." The crested crane
was the flag badge of Uganda under British colonial rule.
Each flag shown is
the flag used by that
nation's government and displayed at the U.N.
headquarters. Where noted the "civil" flag is also
available. It is identical to the "government" flag except
the seal is omitted.
Flags for Outdoor use are made of 100% heavyweight
nylon and finished with strong canvas headings and brass
grommets.
